Two weeks. That's usually all it takes to pass a CLEP exam, and the reason most people don't believe that is they picture months of grinding. They don't need months. They need a plan that tells them exactly what to do each day, and the nerve to actually follow it.
Here's that plan. Fourteen days, start to finish.
Who This Plan is For
It works best if you already have a foot in the door on the subject. Maybe you took a class once, read about it for fun, or picked it up at work. You'll also want to carve out 45 to 60 minutes a day.
One more thing, and it matters: the goal is to pass, not to ace. CLEP passing scores are typically 50 out of 80. Keep that in mind every time you're tempted to over-prepare.
Week 1: Learn and Practice
Days 1-2: Diagnostic + Foundation Start with a diagnostic test. Don't skip this. It tells you which units you can ignore and where you actually need to dig in, and most people are surprised to find they already know 30-40% of the material walking in.
Days 3-5: Unit-by-Unit Practice One unit per day. For each one, follow the same routine:
- Read the key concepts (15 min)
- Answer 15-20 practice questions (20 min)
- Review every wrong answer, because this is where the real learning happens (10 min)
Days 6-7: Review Week 1 Circle back to the topics you got wrong. Resist the urge to re-read what you already know. That feels productive and isn't.
Week 2: Sharpen and Test
Days 8-9: Targeted Practice Pick your weakest 2-3 topics and live there. When something won't click, lean on Sage to walk you through it.
Day 10: First Mock Exam Sit a full timed mock. Forget the score for a second. What you're really watching for is which question types throw you off.
Days 11-12: Fix Weak Spots Take what the mock exposed and drill exactly the topics that cost you points. Nothing else.
Day 13: Final Mock Run another full mock. You should see the number climb. If you're scoring 60%+, you're ready.
Day 14: Light Review + Rest A quick 20-question quiz in the morning, and then you stop. Rest. Cramming the night before doesn't help, and it usually hurts.
Key Tips
- Don't over-study what you know. Hitting 70%+ on a unit? Move on.
- Wrong answers are your best teacher. Spend more time on your mistakes than on new material.
- Use pass probability. PrepLion tells you your odds of passing. Trust the number.
- CLEP has no guessing penalty. Answer every question, even the ones you're unsure about.
