CLEP for Military: How to Get Free College Credits Through DANTES

If you're active duty, there's a benefit sitting right under your nose that a lot of service members never use: free CLEP and DSST exams through DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support). Free as in actually free. Each CLEP normally runs $97, and DANTES picks up the tab.

What DANTES actually covers

• All 34 CLEP exams, completely free (normally $97 each)
• All DSST exams, completely free
• No limit, with one free attempt per exam title
• Test center fees often covered too, at on-base education centers

Getting started

The path is short, and it really does have to happen in this order.

Step 1: Visit your education center

Every installation has one. Walk in, tell them you want to take CLEP exams, and they'll set you up. That's most of the bureaucracy, handled in one conversation.

Step 2: Prepare

Here's where most service members trip. They walk in cold and treat a free exam like a free pass. Even 10-20 hours of focused prep moves your pass rate a lot.

A couple of free ways to do it:

• Modern States gives you free courses plus a free exam voucher. It's a civilian program, but you can use it too.
• PrepLion runs a free diagnostic that tells you exactly what to study, so you're not reviewing things you already know.

Step 3: Take the exam

Schedule at your base education center or any Prometric testing center.

Step 4: Submit your credits

Send the score report to your college. Most military-friendly schools accept all CLEP credits.
